The Current GP Workforce

Consistent with the national rural GP workforce shortage, the Central West currently has a widespread shortage of general practitioners. This results in a significant pressure on the existing workforce, and can result in service gaps and burden on the existing GPs in the area. To address this problem, the Division is working with health professionals, general practices, workforce agencies, the Divisions network, local communities and all levels of government. With the many health workforce stakeholders and agencies involved in GP recruitment and rural retention, the Division is positioned to be the on-the-ground workforce link for general practices.
