Congratulations on embarking on an exciting nursing career in general practice.
Nursing in general practice is a dynamic and vibrant area of the nursing profession.
It offers a diverse range of experiences and provides the opportunity to be part of a clinical team caring for the community. (Australian General Practice Network AGPN, 2006)
AGPN includes the following as some of the benefits of nurses working in General Practice:
- improved health outcomes in chronic illness
- assistance in primary-acute sector integration
- better coordination of care
- increased workforce capacity
- provision of practical and professional support for GPs
- enhancement of the range of services available to people attending the practice

The Nursing in General Practice Orientation leaning package has 9 modules of learning.
This learning package is not intended to provide participants with all the knowledge required to become an expert nurse in the field of general practice.
Participants are encouraged to navigate from this website to other internal and external links to extend learning goals.

Before starting the learning package, take the time to listen to the following presentation from Deb Bardon
Deb is Practice Support Manager for the Division and provides an insight into how nurses can contribute to general practice.
Participants should work through each module at their own pace.
Modules can be accessed by clicking on the link in the left hand column.
At the end of each module there is a self assessment exercise designed to re-enforce your learning.
To enhance your learning a number of links, powerpoints and videos have been embedded within each module.
